PR for PEBA.

OFW remittances at an all-time high: social remittances as new currency from Global Pinoys

Remittances from Filipinos working overseas are at an all-time high. And no, it’s not just because they’re sending back US dollars, Saudi Riyals, Euros or Japanese Yen; but because our modern-day heroes are sending back what’s known as social remittances.

Social remittances refer to ideas, practices, identities and social capital that flow from receiving to sending country communities. It was coined by sociologist Peggy Levitt in her book “The Transnational Villagers and she describes social remittances being transferred by migrants and refugees that are exchanged by letters or other forms of communication that includes phone, fax, the internet or video. She suggested that social remittance affects family relations, gender roles, class and race identity, as well as have a substantial impact on political, economic and religious participation.

This concept isn’t something new for the Philippines. In the 1800s, this was already seen through the newspaper La Solidaridad and the novels of Jose Rizal. Like them whose ideas paved . In the 21st century, blogging is the new form of social remittance of Filipinos working and living abroad. Through their blogs they are publishing their stories online to inspire others. They also advocate for causes, help others and muster support from their readers to help effect change in their own little ways.

With globalization, Filipino migrants are beginning to realize the power of harnessing the potential of social remittance. They may be students pursuing a higher education, a professional with a white-collar job or a migrant working as house help; but all of them have something in common: an economic goal and aspiration.

This year the Pinoy Expat/OFW Blog Awards or PEBA 2011 is geared to recognize the contributions of Filipino bloggers abroad. This year’s theme is dubbed as "Ako'y Magbabalik, Hatid Ko'y Pagbabago." (I Will Return, I Will Bring Change) as Balikbayans not only send back their monetary remittances; but social remittances as well.

For this year PEBA opens a new blog search called PEBA’s Any Blogger, Anywhere for all Filipino bloggers in various categories, at home or abroad. This year’s blog contest will look into narratives as to how returning Expats/OFW will make use and share their social remittance or their talents, skills and fortunes to bring change to their families, communities and country. Expats/OFW bloggers who will be joining the contest will be required to write a blog entry on the said theme. There is also an ongoing blog contest for OFW supporters.

For 2011, VIPinoy, a service and perks for overseas Filipinos and OFWs offered by Ayala Malls is the biggest sponsor of PEBA. Ayala Mall is providing Trinoma Activity Center as the venue for the awards nights on December 9, 2011 and Market Market as venue for its photo exhibit from December 9, 2011. PEBA is equally supported by one of its long time partner NOKIA and communication giant Globe Telecom.

PEBA will exclusively invite some 200 guests who can make their reservation and confirmation/RSVP of their attendance through VIPinoy Lounges in the different Ayala Malls and the awarding will be watched by a thousand or more and will be telecast live for OFWs to watch.

XOXO.

Yeah, sorry about the lame title but have been watching Season 5 Gossip Girl lately and it stuck. Lol. Is anyone still watching the show? Story-wise it's really spiraling towards disaster but I do like the Blair Waldorf and Dan Humphrey dynamic. I just wish they would really go there and give us a D/B ending. But this is Gossip Girl, so I'll hold back on the hope. I'll just enjoy the wardrobe on the show which can kinda make one really sad because, hey, I still have to look at my closet. Lol.

I really am trying to be a good blogger but with the wonky weather and no time, outfit posts are going from few to scarce. Any kind of post for that matter. But I have new purchases on the shoe department so maybe I'll post about those then. Have a happy, everyone!

Style Enthusiast.

I think it will be a while before you can see any new pieces from me. I'm just going to do my best in mixing and matching every piece of clothing I have for as long as I can so I hope you guys don't get bored of my outfit posts. Please? Okay!

More than usual, the details I provide on where I got an item are mostly "From Hong Kong", "From Seoul", etc. Most of my items don't come from a specific or widely known brand (but of course there is the few once in a while; very few). I mostly love the little shops/boutiques carrying assortment of pieces from obscure brands or no brands at all. You find those little treasures in there. Unique and fresh and of course, the idea you're the only one who owns that certain design/print is a big plus. Every girl has thought of that at least once, right?

But with my love for those shops/boutiques, I make it my mission to go in each one, look at each piece of item they sell; I never leave without making sure I've seen everything. Which I think drives my family nuts. Lol. They always end up waiting for me like "forever". Shopping with friends is way better anyway. Lol. But that has always been my shopping system: Go inside and never leave a piece unturned. But it tends to not sit well with the sales ladies though especially when I end up not buying anything. Which is mostly the case, but it's just because I want to pick out what I like most then make a mental note so I can come back for it if, you know, I don't see anything better in the other countless shops (And I just love to have an excuse to look at pretty stuff). Sounds reasonable. Lol. The only problem is I tend to fall in love with too many things so when it comes to decision time...

Aside from the songs being catchy, their wardrobe; everything.
Can I just steal all of their clothes(Yes, even the straitjacket)? Please?
I am slowly crawling towards the 100-followers mark, I'm thinking if I should do a giveaway. Nothing too fancy though. Still thinking. Coz I might not have enough readers to pull it off. :)

Meet-up with a friend on a business trip.

Another friend and I went to watch Captain America: The First Avenger before actually meeting up with her coz she had some set-up to do for work. Chris Evans. Drool. (Chris Evans in military uniform. More drool. You just want to give hum a backhug. Lol.) Never really thought that way about Chris Evans but after seeing the movie that's the only reaction I have. Lol. And it does help that the movie was really done well. Been getting great reviews from people so we wanted to catch it on the big screen. Lucky we got the chance!

After the movie, went straight to Manila Peninsula in Makati. Had to wait a while still before our friend was done with work. And we think we actually saw the members of the group, Korn in the lobby just as they were checking in. But we weren't sure. Lol. Though there were members of Ovation Productions and I know Korn was going to perform here coz of the endless string of commercials on TV. We thought of getting a picture with them but it would be kind of awkward since we don't really know them know them. Anyway, it was burgers, fondue and good conversation throughout the night.

Hmmm, I want to get another haircut.

Pinays Meet the Maven Lifestyle.

The quest to find a good read that addresses the concerns of women readers who want information on areas that other fashion and beauty magazines tend to neglect is over.

ABS-CBN Publishing’s newest bi-monthly title Maven magazine, first released in April 2011, is the latest must-read dedicated to women aged 25-35, whose interests range the typical topics fashion and beauty magazines tackle, to social issues and health concerns no other magazine talks about. Living by the tagline “Homegrown, Real, and Glamorous,” Maven aims to highlight local models, discuss real issues that confront today’s women, and at the same time, maintain the natural fun and beauty of the Filipinas.

Maven magazine’s Editor-in-Chief Nana Caragay says that there are a lot of magazines out in the market that address all-out fashion or all-out sex. “And we thought that there has to be something that talks about fashion, beauty, life, sex, and all those other things that any well-rounded woman would like to know,” says Nana.

To commemorate the success of their first two issues whose covers featured Georgina Wilson and Bea Alonzo, a celebratory event was recently held at Opus Bar, Resorts World Manila. Some of the personalities who graced the celebration were Head of ABS CBN Publishing Ernie Lopez, makeup artist Jigs Mayuga, model Ornusa Cadness, model/TV host Kelly Misa, stylist Sidney Yap, and representatives from the media.

Georgina Wilson, who was on the cover of Maven’s debut issue, says she feels a connection to Maven because “Maven targets women like me who are in need of answers and who are excited about life. And I believe it’s going to be an exciting ride for Maven and it’s very flattering to be their first cover girl,” says Georgina.

“We want to make a difference in the magazine industry and the people behind Maven are working hard to deliver credible and relatable stories. This is why we chose Georgina Wilson as our first cover girl—because she represents what the magazine stands for: women who are smart, glamorous, and fun,” Nana says.

What's in a name?

Layer: From Seoul, Korea
Envelope Bag: From Seoul, Korea
(Get the bag.)
Leggings: Mango
Shoes: From Korea

Have you ever had to repeat your name so many times and still they never get it? Unless you literally write it down. And they'd be like ooooh. Ever since I can remember I've had that dilemma when it comes to my name. I'm like "Sharnie". And they're like "Charlene", "Charmee"? "Shar-nie". Ah, "Sharie". I spell it out. S-H-A-R-N-I-E. Ahhhh, Sharmie. It never ends. Lol.

When I was little, I seriously wanted to change my name to something that won't elicit so much confusion. I'm like, "Don't you care enough to actually get my name right?". I was a paranoid kid. Wanted to change it to something like Alex or Joanna. I'm like, "Okay, why don't they get my name?" Lol. But then I've learned to like my name. Funny though, I never give it out anymore when I order from any coffee shop. They'll write Charlie, Sharley, etc. So I tell them to just put a letter "S" and they write it as "Es". Lol.

Love this little layer that I found! Anyways, I'm considering learning Korean. Self-studying. Let's see where it goes. I don't exactly have a lot of self-discipline. Lol. But I can read one word! First word I ever learned to read in Hangul. It's 바나나. Banana. Lol. Thanks to the banana milk craving we had last time.

Incoherent post.

Title is inspired by Harry Potter. Coz we went to watch Deathly Hallows Pt. 2! So I took inspiration from Harry Potter for this outfit too in a way. I was never a fan of the movies just cause I really love the books. When I grow up, I want to be J.K. Rowling. Lol. Nevertheless, I wouldn't miss the last epic journey into the wizarding world. Excuse the awkward expression.

I really started this outfit with the socks though. Dobby the Elf has an addiction to socks and even wondered why would socks match. Isn't it more fun to mix them up? The most random inspiration. Anyways, I love this loose sheer top from Seoul. I thought about wearing the cape-like layer/jacket I have at first but I was a little unsure coz of the heat in Manila these days. In the end, I decided to go with this sheer top; it's loose enough to have that same silhouette. The light material is just right for the weather. And of course the glasses as accessory. Harry Potter-esque? Only they're much bigger and I love them.

Haiiii there! It's been a while for this blog once again. Haven't been feeling well the past days so I didn't have the energy to post anything! And it's got something to do with this thing called laziness too. Lol.

Colors!! So not me, right? Lol. Not black and white this time. Yay. It's time I tried it too! Anyways, why the title? It's due to the banana milk craving my friend and I had. It's something I got to try once in Seoul and my friend wanted to try it too. Fortunately there's a lot of Korean groceries that's opened here in Manila, probably due to the number of Korean's living here.

Banana milk! Yay. But I found it too sweet (left) compared to the one I had; that one was in a plastic container (right). Hmmm. Maybe next time we'll be on the hunt again for it. But we have to find ones in plastic containers. Lol. There's gotta be some here, right?

Outfit post and banana milk. Gotta love this dynamic. Lol.

Where's my music video?

Top: From Seoul, Korea
Pants: From Hong Kong
Envelop bag: From Seoul, Korea (Get the bag.)

My attempt at poking fun at my fascination with the "Hallyu Wave"(Korean Wave), particularly in this outfit. Doesn't it look like what a K-pop star would wear in a music video? No? Okay, my bad. Just trying. Lol. Don't mind me and my geeky thoughts. Anyway, I've been meaning to do a Big Bang related post. A sort of appreciation for those talented individuals, especially now that they're faced with a very sensitive issue. Hoping they'd stay strong and continue to inspire their fans and people around the world. So I guess this is a start. I'm starting with Kang Dae Sung.

Photos credit to:supersagi.wordpress, allkpop, koreansound.blogspot

Dae Sung is more known for his bright smile, being funny, and just his overall sincere personality. His style is more that of a typical guy. Simple with a touch of manliness. His looks often have a touch of detail from studs to chains to anything slightly bling-ish (Is that a word?) I decided to take inspiration from that part of his style. I thought the top I have is a perfect way to show off that kind of style that I have always connected to him nowadays.

With the pants, well, I've only ever seen Dae Sung in jeans or pants or colorful pants, if I remember correctly. But I wanted to add his laidback personality (I would imagine it's his attitude towards his style as well.) and so I chose this to pair with the top.

Well, that's my first attempt. We'll see if I can keep it up with the rest of the members. I am just a fangirl at heart. Lol. And I end it with one of their latest releases. Love Song.

Coz when I shop, the world gets better.

Wedges: Millie's
Envelope Bag: From Seoul, Korea
Sheer: From Hong Kong

I do love that quote. Retail therapy anyone? Though my friend does have a point when she said that when the credit card bills come, the world then gets suckier. Lol. Anyways, let's talk about the shorts. Or can it be considered as culotte pants? I usually don't know the "technical terms" of pieces of clothing. I learned about culotte pants just days before. Lol. The flare makes it look like a skirt when in fact it's not. They are hot items these days in Seoul. Check it out here in my site: sevenhalfminutes.blogspot.com. If you love a pop of color!

I think it's usually obvious what my fave items of the moment are based on my posts. My red envelope bag (A blue one is up for sale! Check it out!) and my not so new wedges. I am always inserting links to my site; it's really no easy task to try to get your stuff out there. Any advice? Anyway, the sheer layer I found in Hong Kong. Love it! Love the length too. Though I'd like to find another with a different material and longer length. Reminds me of my obsession with this outfit. Love. Love. I need to find one. Just hope I will not look like I came out of a Matrix movie if I don one.

It suddenly rained when we were taking these shots. Look at the ground. Lol. The sheer fabric is not going to look good when it comes in contact with rain. Good thing it didn't show in the photos. Lol. In other news, my hair grows so fast. Or is it just me? Oh well.

Signature.

Blazer: From Seoul, Korea
Envelope Bag: From Seoul, Korea
Wedges: Millie's

Amidst the sea of colors that is so in right now and is everywhere, I can't seem to leave behind my signature colors: black and white. I tend to gravitate towards these two colors when out shopping. Lol. But I guess they fit with the weather right now in Manila; non-stop rain and a cool atmosphere. The white blazer is one I bought in Seoul. Seoul's love affair for blazers is why the city has somehow become number one in my heart, replacing the ever bustling Hong Kong which was always at the top. But I still heart HK to bits and will always, always want to go back. Forever. Lol. Professing my undying love for it again. But Seoul... Ah, Seoul. We will see each other again. I hope. Fiercely. If anyone wants to do something about their addiction to blazers, I have just the cure in my site sevenhalfminutes.blogspot.com.

The sleeveless top I am wearing is also from Seoul and I'm selling one just like it here. I do love these kinds of simple tops; ones that can go so well with blazers. No hassles.

Speaking of Seoul, the postcard I sent to myself from the N Seoul Tower has never arrived. What? Yes, people send postcards to themselves all the time as a souvenier. Lol. But sadface, I wanted that postcard! Whyeeee? I paid 400 won for the postage and all too! Lol. Wonder if it will ever come. Sigh.

I still loooove my bag. Lol. Can never get enough of it! You'll love it too! I have it in a different color. sevenhalfminutes.blogspot.com Lol. Did I sound like a bad commercial? Lol.

Weather, I hope you brighten up soon.

June 19.

Today is my birthday (Yey. And Fathers' Day! Happy Fathers' Day to every dad in the world!) and there was supposed to be an outfit post but it rained, and it rained, and it's still raining so had no chance of getting any decent photos. I'll just have to wait for another day. I was really looking forward to making one but, oh well. Instead I'll just post this outfit from Vivi Magazine because it's one of my wishes for my birthday. (I would like to think that on one's birthday, they can make all the wishes they want).

long1

So much WANT for this whole ensemble! Why is this made of so much win? The long denim. Eep. Something I've always wanted!! Oh and that hat! So Mad Hatter-esque! But I don't know if it will suit me since they tell me I have a small face. And will it look okay with really short hair? The hat could be a little much but I don't care! Lol. Want. Want. Omg, tell me where I can get them buttheyhavetobewithinbudget. Lol. Actually, everything in Vivi Magazine is always WANT for me. Sigh. I should stop buying them then, huh? Lol. Glad I don't get to buy them every month or else... That's my wish and a trip to Europe. Yeah.

Sheer.

sheer2

Top: From Hong Kong
Shoes: Millie's
Cuff: From Seoul, Korea

We had a small celebration for my grandmother (mother side) last Saturday and in the past I always had a hard time finding something to wear since I can't wear most of what's in my closet. Black, white, gray. Wearing those colors to moments of celebrations is a sensitive (sometimes big) issue. But I'm glad we have this chic sheer cape-like top now.

They would have preferred red but this works for me as well. Lol. I love the material, the silhouette it gives. And I'm wearing it with new wedges! Wedges and platforms are so in right now. It's like the higher the better. Lol. Have seen such awesome designs but sometimes the height is a little too much for me. All my friends will be complaining! Lol. So, glad to have found this one with,I guess, just the "right" number of inches. If there is such a thing. Lol.

Oh, got a haircut again. Hehe. Anyway, there's only one outfit post for today. There was no time yesterday; our friend's engagement party. Next time I will do better! Watched X-Men First Class; been so long since we've went out and watched a movie but it rocked! Love it! (Michael Fassbender and James McAvoy!) Can't wait for Transformers 3 and Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows. Ack, so sleepy right now. Going to rest my eyes a bit.
